UK Government has announced plans to expand the Global Talent visa to more research-intensive and technology businesses as part of the Autumn Budget 2026, published on 28 October 2026.
The proposed expansion will allow additional UK businesses to support applications from highly skilled international researchers, scientists and engineers through the Global Talent visa’s endorsed funder pathway.
The Government has tasked UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) with identifying further eligible businesses by spring 2027, with particular attention to sectors identified in the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
What Changes Were Announced in Autumn Budget 2026?
Under the Budget announcement, UKRI will work with regional organisations across the UK to identify additional research and development (R&D)-intensive businesses that could qualify as approved host organisations.
The expansion will focus on businesses operating in sectors prioritised under the Government’s Industrial Strategy, including:
- Advanced manufacturing
- Digital and technology industries
- Life sciences
- Clean energy
- Creative industries
Once approved, these businesses could support eligible international researchers undertaking qualifying funded research projects in the UK.
The measure follows an earlier expansion of the endorsed funder pathway, which enabled more than 100 research-intensive businesses to support international researchers through the Global Talent visa.
The Autumn Budget 2026 announcement seeks to extend this opportunity to further businesses, particularly those operating outside established research centres.
What Will the Expansion Mean for UK Businesses?
The proposed changes could provide more research-intensive businesses with access to international specialists whose expertise is required for research and development projects.
For technology companies and other research-led organisations, becoming an approved host could provide an additional immigration option for recruiting overseas researchers.
The expansion is also intended to support regional economic growth by extending access to the pathway to businesses across different parts of the UK.
However, inclusion in the approved host organisation list will not automatically make every overseas employee eligible for the Global Talent visa. Applicants must continue to satisfy the relevant endorsement requirements.
When Will the Changes Take Effect?
According to the Autumn Budget 2026, UKRI aims to identify additional eligible businesses by spring 2027.
The Government has not yet confirmed the full list of businesses that will be included in this further expansion.
Research-intensive businesses interested in the pathway should monitor UKRI announcements for further information on eligibility and approval.
