UK Student Visa Refusals: Seven Countries Account for Over 70% of Refusals

UK Student visa refusals have remained high, with seven countries accounting for more than 70% of rejected applications, according to recent research published by The PIE News.

India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Ghana and Sri Lanka account for the largest combined share of refusals. The findings have raised concerns about the impact of increasing refusal rates on international students and UK universities. The research also indicates that refusal rates have remained elevated for three consecutive quarters, despite universities strengthening their admissions and compliance procedures.

Which Countries Have the Highest Number of UK Student Visa Refusals?

According to The PIE News, seven countries account for more than 70% of UK Student visa refusals:

  • India
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Nepal
  • Ghana
  • Sri Lanka

These countries represent major international student recruitment markets where refusal rates have exceeded the 5% threshold identified in the Government’s proposed changes to Student sponsor compliance requirements.

However, this does not mean that 70% of applicants from these countries receive refusals. Rather, the seven nationalities collectively account for more than 70% of the refusals examined.

Other countries, including Kenya and Iran, have recorded higher individual refusal rates. However, their lower application volumes mean they contribute fewer refusals overall.

UK Student Visa Refusal Rates Continue to Rise

The research examined Student visa refusal trends between the third quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026. Although refusal rates varied between nationalities, the rolling 12-month figures showed a sustained increase.

Universities have introduced additional compliance checks to reduce unsuccessful applications. However, these measures have not yet produced a consistent reduction in refusal rates.

The findings are particularly significant for institutions that recruit substantial numbers of students from countries experiencing higher refusal rates.

Indian Student Visa Refusal Rate Reaches 8%

India remains one of the UK’s largest international student recruitment markets. However, the research found that the average UK Student visa refusal rate for Indian nationals reached approximately 8% across the three quarters examined.

This exceeds the proposed 5% threshold under the revised Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA) framework. Given the number of Indian students applying to UK universities, an increase in refusals could affect both prospective students and university recruitment.

How Are UK Student Visa Refusals Affecting Universities?

UK universities must meet Home Office sponsorship requirements to retain their Student sponsor licences. The Basic Compliance Assessment measures universities’ performance against requirements relating to visa refusals, student enrolment and course completion.

Proposed changes to these requirements would introduce stricter compliance standards, placing additional pressure on universities to monitor their recruitment practices.

According to The PIE News, some universities have already restricted or suspended recruitment from countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ghana and Sri Lanka.

These restrictions may affect prospective students seeking admission to particular UK institutions. However, an individual Student visa application must still be assessed against the relevant Immigration Rules. Applicants do not automatically face refusal because of their nationality.

Which UK Universities Rely Most on These Seven Countries?

The research also examined international student enrolments at UK universities using Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) data for 2024–25.

Several institutions recorded particularly high proportions of international students from the seven countries.

UK UniversityPercentage of International Intake
University of the West of Scotland95%
University of East London94%
University of Hertfordshire92%
Coventry University84%
Ulster University84%
University of Sunderland78%
University of Greenwich76%

These percentages represent the proportion of international enrolments from the seven countries, not the universities’ visa refusal rates.

Institutions with greater dependence on these recruitment markets may face financial pressures if Student visa refusals continue to affect enrolment numbers.

In contrast, Russell Group universities generally recorded lower levels of dependence on the seven countries. For example, the figures showed that these countries accounted for 5% of international intake at University College London and 8% at the University of Edinburgh.

What Do Rising UK Student Visa Refusals Mean for International Students?

The increase in UK Student visa refusals does not mean that students from the affected countries are prohibited from studying in the UK.

Applicants must continue to meet the eligibility and suitability requirements under the Immigration Rules.

The Home Office may also conduct an interview to assess whether an applicant genuinely intends to study in the UK. Importantly, receiving an offer from a university or obtaining a CAS does not guarantee that the Home Office will approve a Student visa application.

Applicants should carefully review the requirements before applying and ensure that their supporting evidence is complete and accurate.

Can You Reapply After a UK Student Visa Refusal?

A UK Student visa refusal does not necessarily prevent an applicant from submitting a new application. However, the appropriate course of action depends on the reasons for refusal.

Applicants should carefully examine their refusal letter to identify which requirements the Home Office considers unmet. Depending on the circumstances, an applicant may be able to request an administrative review where the relevant rules permit it or submit a fresh application addressing the refusal grounds.

Submitting another application without resolving the original concerns may result in a further refusal.

Professional immigration advice can help applicants understand their available options before taking further action.
