Parent of a Child Student Visa UK: Eligibility, Fees and Requirements (2026)

Parents who wish to accompany their young children to the UK for education may be eligible for a Parent of a Child Student visa. However, this immigration route is subject to strict eligibility requirements, financial conditions and restrictions on what parents can do while living in the UK.

The visa is intended for parents of children aged between 4 and 11 who are studying at independent schools in the UK. It allows one parent to accompany their child for a limited period, provided they meet the relevant Immigration Rules.

This guide explains who can apply for a Parent of a Child Student visa UK, the financial requirements, application fees, supporting documents and conditions attached to the visa.

What Is a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

The Parent of a Child Student visa allows an eligible parent to accompany their child while the child studies at an independent school in the UK.

The child must hold, or be applying for, permission under the Child Student route. The route also accommodates certain circumstances involving children who currently hold permission under the former Tier 4 (Child) category.

Unlike immigration routes intended for long-term residence, the Parent of a Child Student visa is temporary. Parents must maintain their main home outside the UK and intend to leave when their permission expires.

The visa also carries restrictions on employment, studying and access to public funds.

Who Can Apply for a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

To qualify for a Parent of a Child Student visa, applicants must satisfy several requirements.

The Child Must Be Aged Between 4 and 11

The child must be aged between 4 and 11 when the parent applies.

The child must also attend an independent school in the UK and hold, or be applying for, a Child Student visa. A child who currently holds a Tier 4 (Child) visa may also satisfy the relevant requirement.

Only One Parent Can Accompany the Child

The route generally allows only one parent to accompany the child to the UK.

The child’s other parent must ordinarily remain overseas and cannot obtain permission under the same route to accompany the child simultaneously.

The Parent Must Have Sufficient Financial Resources

Applicants must demonstrate that they have enough money to support themselves and their child during their stay.

The financial requirement depends on the length of the intended stay, the number of accompanying children and the applicant’s circumstances.

The Parent Must Maintain Their Main Home Outside the UK

Applicants must maintain their main home overseas and intend to leave the UK when their permission expires.

This requirement reflects the temporary nature of the route.

Can Both Parents Accompany Their Child to the UK?

The Parent of a Child Student visa does not ordinarily permit both parents to live in the UK as accompanying parents under this route.

Only one parent can normally receive permission to accompany the child.

The other parent may be able to visit the UK under the Visitor route, provided they meet the relevant requirements.

However, a visit must be genuinely temporary. The Visitor route cannot be used to establish residence in the UK.

The Home Office caseworker guidance also addresses certain exceptional family circumstances, including situations involving separated parents or changes in caregiving responsibilities.

We examine these provisions in greater detail in Part 2 of this guide.

Can You Bring Your Other Children to the UK?

A parent may accompany more than one child under this route, provided the additional children meet the relevant Child Student requirements.

For example, where two siblings are studying at independent schools in the UK and both hold Child Student permission, one parent may be able to accompany them.

However, the Parent of a Child Student visa does not generally permit applicants to bring other family members as dependants.

Family members who wish to visit may need to consider a separate immigration route.

How Long Can You Stay on a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

Permission under the Parent of a Child Student route is linked to the child’s immigration status and age.

Generally, a parent can remain in the UK until:

  • The child’s Child Student visa expires; or
  • The child reaches the age of 12.

Whichever occurs first determines the end of the parent’s permission.

For example, if a child’s visa remains valid beyond their twelfth birthday, the parent’s permission will ordinarily end when the child turns 12.

Where a parent accompanies more than one Child Student, different provisions may apply. The Home Office considers the children’s ages and the duration of their immigration permission.

What Happens When the Child Turns 12?

A child may continue studying in the UK after turning 12, provided they continue to hold valid immigration permission and have appropriate care arrangements.

However, the parent’s permission under this route will generally end unless they qualify to remain on the basis of accompanying a younger Child Student.

Parents should therefore consider future care arrangements before their permission expires.

Depending on the circumstances, the child may be able to board at their school or live with an appropriate family member.

Any arrangements must satisfy the applicable Child Student requirements.

What Are You Not Allowed to Do on a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

The Parent of a Child Student visa comes with specific restrictions. While living in the UK under this route, parents cannot:

  • Work: Undertake paid employment.
  • Study: Enrol in courses or undertake studies.
  • Start a business: Establish or operate a business in the UK.
  • Make the UK their main home: Parents must maintain their main home outside the UK.
  • Access public funds: Claim benefits classified as public funds or receive the State Pension.
  • Bring other family members: The visa does not allow additional family members to join the parent as dependants.
  • Switch to another visa: Change to a different immigration route from within the UK.

Failure to comply with these conditions may affect future immigration applications.

How Much Does a Parent of a Child Student Visa Cost?

Applicants must pay the relevant visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.

According to the GOV.UK fee information provided, the charges are:

Application TypeFee
Parent of a Child Student visa application£726
Extension application from inside the UK£1,407
Immigration Health SurchargeUsually £1,035 per year

The Immigration Health Surcharge is generally payable as part of the online application and contributes towards access to the National Health Service during the period of immigration permission.

Applicants should check the applicable fees before submitting their applications, as the Home Office may revise immigration charges.

How Much Money Do You Need for a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

Applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves and their child without relying on public funds.

The financial requirement is generally £1,560 per month for the intended stay, up to a maximum of nine months.

This amount covers both the parent and one Child Student.

For an intended stay of nine months or longer, the maximum maintenance requirement is:

£1,560 × 9 months = £14,040

What if You Are Accompanying More Than One Child?

An additional £625 per month is generally required for each additional eligible Child Student, up to a maximum of nine months.

For example, a parent accompanying two Child Students may need to demonstrate:

Maintenance RequirementMonthly Amount
Parent and first Child Student£1,560
Second Child Student£625
Total£2,185

For nine months, this amounts to £19,665.

These figures concern maintenance and do not necessarily include outstanding school fees or other application costs.

The financial assessment may differ where the parent and child apply together or where the applicant qualifies for an exemption.

Do You Need to Show Funds When Extending Your Visa?

Applicants who have been in the UK with valid immigration permission for at least 12 months may qualify for an exemption from providing financial evidence.

The precise requirements depend on their immigration circumstances and the applicable rules.

How Long Does a Parent of a Child Student Visa Take?

According to GOV.UK, applicants applying from outside the UK will usually receive a decision within three weeks.

However, processing may take longer where supporting documents require verification, personal circumstances require further examination or the Home Office needs additional information.

Some applicants may be able to pay for a faster decision, depending on service availability.

Applicants should avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements before receiving their immigration decision.

Can You Extend a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

Parents may apply to extend their permission while in the UK, provided they and their child continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

This may include circumstances where the child holds permission under the former Tier 4 (Child) route.

An extension application must be submitted before the existing visa expires. The application fee is £1,407, in addition to the applicable Immigration Health Surcharge.

According to GOV.UK, extension applications usually take eight weeks to process, although complex applications may take longer.

Applicants who submit a valid application before their existing permission expires may generally remain in the UK while awaiting a decision.

However, they must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man while their application is pending. Doing so will result in the application being treated as withdrawn.

Understanding the Home Office’s Detailed Requirements

Meeting the general eligibility requirements is only part of the application process.

The Home Office also assesses matters such as the parent-child relationship, immigration history, financial evidence and compliance with immigration conditions.

More complicated circumstances can arise where parents are separated, one parent is already living in the UK, caregiving responsibilities change or the child approaches their twelfth birthday.

In Part 2, we examine the suitability requirements, relationship evidence, secondary carers, financial assessments and the circumstances in which applications may be refused.
