eVisa Update: All Biometric Residence Permit Holders Can Apply for an eVisa

The United Kingdom is taking significant steps towards a fully digital immigration system, with the introduction of eVisas set to replace physical documents by the end of 2024. This transformation marks a pivotal moment, particularly for Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) holders. As the UK moves towards a more secure, efficient, and user-friendly immigration framework, BRP holders will need to adapt to the new digital format to maintain their residency status.

In recent years, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has been developing and implementing a digital immigration system aimed at replacing physical documents with an online record of a migrant’s immigration status, known as an eVisa. This shift is part of the UK government’s broader initiative to modernise and streamline immigration processes. By moving away from physical documents, the government aims to enhance security, reduce fraud, and simplify the verification process for both authorities and immigrants. This digital transformation is expected to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience for all involved.

As part of these digitalisation efforts, the Home Office has made immigration status information available via the online ‘view and prove your immigration status’ service on gov.uk. The goal is for all individuals to have online access to their immigration status by the end of 2024. The latest update to the Home Office eVisa guidance confirms that holders of a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) in the UK no longer require an email invitation to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account and access their eVisa. Initially, access to the eVisa system was available by invitation only, but this is no longer the case.

Impact on BRP Holders

The shift to eVisas has significant implications for Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) holders. Those with BRPs expiring on 31 December 2024 must take proactive steps to transition to the new digital system. The latest update from the Home Office confirms that BRP holders no longer need an email invitation to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This change allows BRP holders to set up their accounts and secure their eVisas before their current permits expire.

Updated Guidance

The UKVI has regularly updated its eVisa guidance to address various scenarios and provide clarity for applicants. The most recent update, issued on 6 August 2024, includes key details for applicants. For BRP holders whose permits expire on 31 December 2024, the guidance now explicitly advises that you should create a UKVI account and access your eVisa before your BRP expires. The guidance reads:

“If you have a biometric residence permit (BRP) that expires on 31 December 2024, you can now create a UKVI account and access your eVisa. You should do this before the expiry date of your BRP.”

In situations where your BRP card has been lost, you can still create a UKVI account using your travel document, such as a passport, or your visa application reference number. It is important to request a replacement BRP only if it has been lost or stolen and you have no other form of identity document available to create a UKVI account.

Once you have created your UKVI account, if you have permission to stay in the UK, you will be able to sign in to the ‘view and prove’ service to access your eVisa. If your eVisa details are not immediately visible, there is no need for immediate action. The guidance clarifies that UKVI will contact you directly by email once your eVisa is available to view. Until then, you can continue to use your BRP to demonstrate your immigration status.
