Graduate Visa Cut to 18 Months: Should You Apply Before 1 January 2027?

International graduates approaching 2027 face an important decision about their Graduate visa timing. The application date could determine whether they receive two years or 18 months. However, applicants cannot simply apply early without meeting every legal requirement.

The cut-off rule

UK Government has confirmed a shorter Graduate visa for most non-doctoral applicants. Applications made by 31 December 2026 will receive two years. Applications made from 1 January 2027 will receive only 18 months. Doctoral graduates will continue receiving three years.

Importantly, Your graduation date does not determine the applicable visa period. The application date determines whether you receive two years or 18 months. A qualifying application submitted by 31 December 2026 receives two years. However, your university must first notify the Home Office of successful completion. Applications submitted before that notification may not satisfy the Graduate route requirements.

A qualifying application submitted during December 2026 could secure two years. That provides six additional months for working, job hunting, and planning sponsorship. However, graduates should never apply before meeting every eligibility requirement.

UK Graduate visa starts when the Home Office approves the application. It does not begin when the online application is submitted. Applicants usually receive a decision within eight weeks. Applicants can generally remain in Britain while awaiting a valid decision.

When can an application legally be submitted?

Applicants must be inside the UK when applying for a Graduate visa. They must hold Student permission or qualifying Tier 4 permission. They must also have successfully completed an eligible course.

The university must notify the Home Office about successful course completion. This notification must happen before the Graduate visa application is submitted.

Students do not need to wait for graduation or receive their certificate. However, their university must first report successful course completion to the Home Office. Students should confirm that this notification has occurred before submitting their application.

Applicants must also apply before their existing Student permission expires. Consequently, two important deadlines may affect graduates approaching January 2027. The university must first notify the Home Office about successful completion. The applicant must then apply before their Student permission expires.

Applicants should also consider their travel arrangements carefully. They must be inside the UK when submitting their application. Overseas travel during a pending application may cause the application’s withdrawal. Graduates should check current guidance before making any travel arrangements.

Graduate-to-Skilled-Worker planning

The Graduate route allows most employment and does not require sponsorship. However, it cannot be extended when the permission ends. Graduates wanting longer residence often switch into the Skilled Worker route.

A Skilled Worker application requires an eligible job with an approved employer. The employer must provide a valid certificate of sponsorship. The role must also satisfy relevant occupation and salary requirements. These requirements can vary according to the applicant’s circumstances.

The shorter Graduate visa provides less time to secure sponsored employment. Graduate visa holders can usually switch to the Skilled Worker route within Britain. They must apply before their existing permission expires. They should not leave the Common Travel Area while awaiting a decision.

The Skilled Worker route may support future settlement in the UK. Time under the Graduate route does not count towards its five-year settlement period.

Should you apply before 1 January 2027?

Eligible graduates should consider applying before 2027 whenever realistically possible. A qualifying application could secure two years instead of 18 months. Those six months may provide valuable time for finding sponsored employment.

However, the deadline does not override the Graduate route’s eligibility requirements. Applicants must wait until their university reports successful course completion. They must also apply before their Student permission expires.

Graduates expecting completion confirmation during January 2027 may receive only 18 months. They should prepare their employment strategy around that shorter period. Starting early could significantly improve their prospects of securing sponsorship.
