Notably, the health and care sector benefits from a reduced threshold of £23,200, recognising the critical demand for professionals in this field.
What Is Being Proposed?
The Conservatives, under increasing pressure from Reform UK, are seeking to amend the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill to enforce a uniform £38,700 salary threshold for all work visas. This would eliminate the flexibility currently in place for industries facing skill shortages, leaving businesses with fewer options to recruit talent from overseas.
The proposed changes extend beyond uk work visa. The government also plans to raise the minimum salary requirement for spousal and family visas from £29,000 to £38,700. Additional restrictions would require spouses to be over 23 years old, married for at least two years, and prevent first cousins from obtaining visas.
Furthermore, individuals on work visas would be barred from accessing government benefits, including housing support, during their stay in the UK.
Business Community Raises Concerns
London business chiefs have strongly criticised these proposals, warning of their damaging effects on economic growth. Mark Hilton, Policy Delivery Director at BusinessLDN, stressed that businesses across the UK are already grappling with severe labour shortages. Raising the salary threshold, he argues, will only make it harder for firms to recruit the talent necessary to drive growth.
“All parties should put economics before politics by working with businesses on building an immigration system that is flexible, fair and responsive,” Hilton stated.
