On 1 July 2025, UK Government announced substantial amendments to the Immigration Rules, set to take effect from 22 July 2025. These upcoming changes will have wide-ranging implications for UK employers, visa applicants and migrant workers, with the social care sector particularly affected.
One of the most significant reforms is the removal of care workers from the list of eligible occupations under the Skilled Worker visa. As a result, from 22 July, UK-based care providers will no longer be able to sponsor new applications for care workers from overseas. In other words, this role will be formally excluded from visa sponsorship eligibility, thereby closing the door to any new international recruits in this position. Consequently, many care providers will need to rethink their hiring strategies and seek domestic alternatives to fill these essential roles.
This marks a major shift for many care providers who have heavily relied on international recruitment to address staffing shortages. Organisations in the sector must now act swiftly to review their workforce plans and explore domestic hiring or alternative solutions.
Higher Salary and Skills Thresholds Introduced
Alongside the changes to care worker eligibility, the Government is introducing higher salary and skills thresholds across the Skilled Worker route. These reforms are part of a wider strategy to curb migration levels and encourage employers to invest in the UK’s resident workforce.
Employers holding a sponsor licence are advised to reassess their recruitment practices immediately, ensuring they are not advertising or sponsoring roles that will soon be ineligible. Continuing to sponsor applicants in roles no longer permitted under the new rules could put your sponsor licence at risk.
A Word of Caution to Overseas Applicants
Individuals outside the UK who are considering applying for care worker roles under the Skilled Worker visa should be aware that sponsorship for this role will end on 22 July 2025. Be aware of recruiters or agents promising job offers and visa sponsorship in the care sector beyond this date, as such claims may be outdated or misleading.
