Home Office to stop issuing Biometric Residence Permits

Home Office to Stop Issuing BRP Cards After 31 October 2024

The UK Home Office has announced a significant change to its immigration documentation process, confirming that Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will no longer be issued after 31 October 2024. This shift is part of a broader plan to transition to a fully digital immigration system, designed to enhance both security and efficiency.

From 1 January 2025, the UK will adopt digital immigration statuses, known as eVisas. This new system will replace physical documents such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs), Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs), and passport endorsements with a digital record of immigration status. The eVisa system aims to increase security by reducing the risks associated with physical documents, such as loss, theft, or fraud.

Current BRP holders are encouraged to set up a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access their eVisa. Through this account, they will be able to view and manage their immigration status online. The Home Office has already begun inviting BRP holders to switch to eVisas, with the transition expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Until then, travellers should continue carrying their physical BRP or BRC when travelling internationally.

The end of BRP issuance marks a major step in the UK’s transition to a digital immigration system. This change is set to streamline immigration processes, enhance security, and offer greater convenience to visa holders. As the UK moves towards a fully digital future, eVisas will become the standard for proving immigration status, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernisation and efficiency.
