Understanding Salary Requirements for the Health and Care Worker Visa

If you are planning to apply for a Health and Care Worker visa in the UK, it’s crucial to understand the different salary requirements. Here’s our expert advice to help you understand the key points.

Salary Requirements

For most jobs, you need to earn at least £29,000 per year or the lower ‘going rate’ for your job, whichever is higher. For instance, if your job’s going rate is £33,000 but you earn £30,000, you won’t meet the usual salary requirements.

When You Can Be Paid Less

You might still qualify for the visa if your salary is below £29,000 or the job’s lower going rate. You can be paid between 70% and 90% of the lower going rate if you earn at least £23,200 per year and meet certain criteria, such as being under 26, a recent graduate, or having a relevant PhD.

Jobs on the Immigration Salary List

Some skilled jobs have lower salary requirements. If your job is on the Immigration Salary List (ISL), you need to earn at least £23,200 or the job’s full going rate, whichever is higher. Here are the jobs on the list:

  1. Health services and public health managers and directors
  2. Health care practice managers
  3. Residential, day and domiciliary care managers and proprietors
  4. Biochemists and biomedical scientists
  5. Physical scientists
  6. Laboratory technicians
  7. Dispensing opticians
  8. Pharmaceutical technicians
  9. Care workers and home carers
  10. Senior care workers

Under 26, Studying, or in Professional Training

If you are under 26, studying, or in professional training, you can be paid 70% of your job’s lower going rate, as long as you earn at least £23,200 per year. This applies if you are working towards a recognised qualification or full registration in your profession.

PhD Level Qualification

If you have a PhD in a relevant field, you can be paid 80% or 90% of your job’s lower going rate. For STEM qualifications, you need to earn at least £23,200 per year, and for non-STEM qualifications, at least £26,100 per year.

Postdoctoral Positions

For postdoctoral positions in scientific roles, you can be paid 70% of the job’s lower going rate if you earn at least £23,200 per year. This applies to specific occupation codes like biochemists and biomedical scientists.
