UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is gradually introducing a fully digital immigration system, replacing physical immigration documents with an online record of a person’s identity and immigration status. This digital record is known as an eVisa. The transition is being carried out in phases to ensure the change is managed carefully and securely.
Since 2018, millions of people have already been issued with an eVisa and UKVI regularly publishes statistics on the number of accounts created. Importantly, updating an existing physical document to an eVisa does not affect an individual’s immigration status or the conditions of their permission to enter or remain in the UK.
What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is a secure digital record of a person’s immigration status, held online and accessed through a UKVI account. It replaces physical documents such as visa stickers and other paper-based evidence of status.
Benefits of an eVisa
The move to a digital system brings several practical advantages:
- eVisas are secure and cannot be lost, stolen or tampered with, unlike physical documents
- There is no need to wait for or collect a physical document once an application is decided, although biometric information may still need to be provided in person where required
- Proving immigration status at the UK border and sharing it with employers or landlords, will be quicker and more straightforward
- Relevant information about immigration status will continue to be shared automatically with certain government departments and public authorities when requested, reducing the need for individuals to provide evidence themselves
Key Updates on the Transition to eVisas
eVisas to replace all visa stickers in 2026
From 12 January, most people granted a visit visa, as well as some other visa types, are informed that they will receive an eVisa alongside a visa sticker. Most individuals who hold a valid UK visa sticker issued before 12 January will also be able to access their eVisa through a UKVI account. Later in 2026, UKVI will stop issuing visa stickers altogether. At that point, all successful applicants will receive only an eVisa.
Applications made from 30 October 2025
If you or your dependants apply successfully for certain work, study or family visas, or for indefinite leave to enter (settlement) on any route on or after 30 October 2025, you may not receive a visa sticker. Instead, you will need to access your eVisa through your UKVI account to view the permission granted before travelling to the UK. Applicants will be informed how to access their eVisa and whether a visa sticker will be issued. For some main applicants on work and study routes, eVisas have already replaced visa stickers for applications made on or after 15 July 2025.
Support for Vulnerable Individuals
From 1 September 2025, additional funding of up to £400,000 has been made available to 25 national and community-based organisations until 31 March 2026. This funding is intended to provide support to vulnerable people who may need assistance accessing or using eVisas.
