UK Reintroduces Visa Regime for Jordanian Nationals

In the latest Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 217), published on 10 September 2024, the UK government has announced the reintroduction of a visa requirement for Jordanian nationals. This move comes in response to a significant rise in the misuse of travel authorisations by visitors and transit passengers from Jordan. The newly reinstated visa regime is designed to ensure the integrity of the UK’s immigration system and address growing concerns about the inappropriate use of visit and transit permissions.

A transition period has been established, allowing Jordanian nationals with a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and a confirmed travel booking made before 10 September 2024 to travel to the UK without a visa until 8 October 2024. This grace period provides some flexibility for those who had already planned their travel under the previous regulations.

The decision to reintroduce the visa requirement is a response to a sharp increase in asylum claims by Jordanian nationals. In the most recent quarter, there were 261 asylum claims, underscoring the need for stricter controls. This surge in asylum applications has highlighted vulnerabilities in the current system, prompting the UK government to take decisive action.

In addition to the visa requirement, Jordanian nationals now need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) when transiting through the UK. This measure ensures that all Jordanian travellers, even those not entering the UK, are subject to thorough checks. The introduction of the DATV requirement further tightens the entry and transit regulations for Jordanian nationals, reflecting the UK’s commitment to maintaining robust border security.

The UK government has stated that these changes are necessary to maintain the security and integrity of the UK’s borders. The misuse of travel permissions by Jordanian nationals has led to a substantial increase in entry refusals and asylum claims, prompting the need for more strict measures. By reintroducing the visa requirement, the UK aims to control immigration more effectively.
