Immigration Health Surcharge Increase Delayed

The Immigration Health Surcharge increase from £400 to £624 has now been delayed from the initial date of the 1st of October 2020.

The original Immigration health surcharge order 2020 was scheduled to come into force on the 1st of October 2020 but that has now been replaced by a new order which confirms the increase in the Immigration health surcharge will take place 21 days after the draft order is signed by a minister.

The new order received approval from the House of Commons and the House of Lords on the 22nd September and 23rd September 2020 respectively. If a minister signs the draft order the 21-day countdown starts; meaning the earliest date for the legislation to take affect if the order was signed today, will be the 19th of October 2020.

With the uncertain times during Covid-19, this news will indeed bring some sigh of relief to those desperate applicants who are struggling to keep up with the increasing expenses of legalising their status in the UK. The UK Visa and Immigration has not announced any form of reduction or relief for any migrant’s fees, except for those who are working for the NHS under a Tier 2 Sponsorship.

Although the revised version of the order does confirm that applicants applying under the Health and Care Visas will be exempt from paying the Immigration Health Surcharge. The basic surcharge will also change from £300 to £470 while the main applicant surcharge of £400 will eventually increase to £624.

Two different Immigration Health Surcharge will be applicable, depending on your circumstances:

  • 1.     A reduced charge of £470 will apply to students (Tier 4), dependents of students (Tier 4), Youth Mobility Visa applicants and all applicants under the age of 18 years.
  • 2.     While all other main applicants will be subject to the new fees of £624 once the legislation is applicable.
