The United Kingdom is embarking on a significant transformation of its immigration system, gradually phasing out physical immigration documents and introducing eVisas. The eVisa Initiative
The eVisa rollout, which commenced on 17 April 2024, is part of the UK government’s broader plan to create a digital border and immigration system. By 2025, nearly all visa holders residing in the UK will have access to an eVisa. Here are the key points:
- Digital Transformation: The Home Office is moving closer to implementing eVisas for visa holders living in the UK. Instead of physical immigration documents like biometric residence permits (BRPs), individuals will now have a digital proof of their immigration status.
- Invitations to Create UKVI Accounts: Starting from 17 April 2024, the Home Office has begun sending emails to all BRP holders, inviting them to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Through this account, they can access their eVisa. The process will be phased, with invitations issued in stages before opening to all BRP holders in summer 2024.
- Benefits of eVisas:
- Enhanced Security: eVisas reduce the risk of fraud, loss, and abuse associated with physical documents. They are securely linked to the holder’s unique biometric information, similar to BRPs.
- Cost Savings: By eliminating the need for physical document production and distribution, the UK government aims to achieve cost savings.
- Convenience: eVisas can be accessed anywhere and in real time. Holders can swiftly update their details, such as contact information or passport details, through the UKVI account.
- Contactless Border Vision: The move toward eVisas aligns with the government’s vision for a contactless border, allowing for increased automation.
- No Impact on Current Status: Creating a UKVI account and accessing the eVisa will not affect an individual’s current immigration status or rights in the UK.
